This home is conceived as a robust solution for the exposed site on West Coast Drive. A prime motivator of the design is for the protection of south west weather forces and also providing longevity of the building fabric.
Shou-Sugi-Ban timber cladding has been selected for its ability to withstand the environment. This is a Traditional Japanese method of charring timber with fire. The process forms a carbon layer on the exterior of the boards which protects the timber and reduces the maintenance. Concrete block walls, exposed face brickwork and weatherboarding will complete the external fabric of the home to provide for a low maintenance exterior.
The floor plan also works as a buffer to the southwest winds by utilizing the shape of the plan as a protected wing.
A swimming pool to the front overlooks the ocean and a courtyard to the rear offers full protection on windy days but also gains ocean views via the transparency of the plan.
